2021 Oratorical Competition

This year’s theme touched on the extreme issues circulating the nation and oppressing communities of color. Time has shown that as a nation develops communities of color are always left behind. This has been seen with the numerous deaths of those who were simply jogging, bird watching, and even residing within their own homes.

To encompass this heartfelt time, we look back at a time in which people of color were segregated to use subpar facilities and considered second-class citizens. Does this still apply today? What is a “second-class citizen”? Are there still groups of people who are treated as “second-class citizens” in today’s society? Is America still yet to complete its process of becoming a true democracy – in which its people have equal rights and full citizenship? Why or why not? What will be your role in building a better future for your community?

Special Shoutout to our winner Elizabeth Plantin for an amazing piece!
